Two 18-year-old girls died after being run over on Wednesday night

They were crossing Avenida Goiás when they were hit and thrown more than 50 meters away by a car. The incident occurred in the early evening, just after sunset, when visibility begins to decline and traffic often intensifies. According to witnesses, the two pedestrians, a middle-aged girl and a young woman, were using the crosswalk when a speeding vehicle approached the intersection at an alarming rate.

Eyewitnesses say the car did not slow down, nor did it appear to attempt to brake before impact. The force of the collision was so severe that both victims were launched through the air, landing more than 50 meters from the point of contact. Emergency services were called immediately, and paramedics arrived within minutes. Tragically, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman, though gravely injured, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol or distracted at the time of the accident. Security camera footage from nearby businesses is being reviewed, and the driver was taken into custody for questioning.

Residents of the area have expressed outrage, pointing out that speeding is a persistent issue along Avenida Goiás. Many have called for increased police presence and better lighting and signage at pedestrian crossings. The accident has reignited discussions about traffic safety and the responsibilities of drivers in urban environments.

As the community mourns the loss and hopes for the recovery of the injured, this tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance and respect for pedestrian rights on the road. A moment of carelessness has now changed lives forever.
